Oh my god Katy, I'm a painter and thought the same about this!!! I'm skeptical that is truly new, perhaps for eyes that are not used to color, but probably cause I'm jealous, hahaha. I wrote this text about this shade, and I have to say, I'm Spanish so I didn't know the word "teal". Thanks for the discovery, and for your great text :)
When I first saw this story, is it weird my first reaction was, "Katy Kelleher needs to hear about olo!"
/ Half a second later, laughing at myself: "Steve, she was probably in the lab!"
// Enjoyed your write-up. Loved the selection of paintings as always. I'm hesitant to discount the ineffable experiences of others, but olo does feel imaginable and hidden somewhere inside the rainbow we're familiar with, but I'd like to verify that for myself before I die. #OLOYOLO
I’d like to see it too but I’m just suspicious of any experience that requires machine intervention. All the promising tech I’ve tried has fallen short. But I’m not adverse to being wrong!
This was a splendid meditation on teal to go with the 'new' color news. And the curated artwork is dazzling. I suddenly remembered a similar color in a childhood dream: As I was getting off the school bus I passed a girl with eyes a color I had never seen before--it was that color. Close to other eye colors I'd seen, but still very different. I can still remember that color after all these years.
oooh I had a feeling you would be writing about this!!
The article I saw showed a very weirdly neon bright pale mint green sort of color (not what I think of as "teal" at all). This is more like what I envisioned; and quite by accident (but not unusual for me) I am wearing pants this color today! Can't wait to read this...
I saw that bright pale mint green color on several articles, too. It wasn't how I think of teal, at all. I went with my definition, though maybe it's more of a cyan? No way of knowing!
Ha, I completely relate to your skepticism. When I read about olo I thought to myself, “ugh, we have enough colors” — which I’m not sure I actually agree with! But I feel skeptical of technological innovation these days, precisely because it feels exclusionary. Anyway, I have a fragrance called Celadon that I love and this piece makes the experience of wearing it all the more mysterious. 🧼🐬🛼🦚
The human eye sees a very narrow slice of the electromagnetic spectrum, so these researchers have really discovered nothing new, IMHO. There are many "colors" we don't see, and no doubt this new color is simply just new to us humans. , ☺️
Thank you for this beautiful reflection, and a good laugh — “Isn't that part of the reason that Al graphics feel so hollow-the program promises to deliver our imagination back to us, but instead serves reheated nachos.” Hah! They can keep their manufactured teal and their reheated nachos.

Love this - teals in Symbolists are some of my favorites too. I’d bite that plate!
Teal, it's like green and blue had a beautiful love child...

such a delicious mystery...
I’m fully in celebration of real with you! I’m wearing a skirt and top in that color today, and love this collection of art!
I really should wear more teal! This is a good reminder to put on some actual COLOR for once. (Predictably, I wear a lot of black.)

When I got to the end and saw the Hopper painting, I gasped. The green frame! Beautiful piece :)
Teal is queen. Lovely article, plus the art yess.
It reminded me of a story I read a few months ago about the International Klein Blue that was so interesting too. Are you familiar with it?
I think you are right about the beguiling power of "beauty imagined", the enchantment of something that is just out of reach.
Ohhhh, I want to see it! I love the idea of colors we can’t see - like I love color so much I’m blown away that there are ones we can’t see!
as soon as i read that article i thought of you omg
i’m skeptical—is olo not just the color you can see with the “true cyan illusion” that went viral years ago?
